The I-MAESTRO Music Exercise Generation Tool offers support to teachers in creating customized exercises for their students.

For example, when studying a piece of music in an instrumental lesson, the teacher or student can mark up a difficult passage in the score, load the passage into the Exercise Generation Tool and create exercises that help to learn this passage. Also, exercises could be generated to study underlying theoretical concepts or related skills, e.g. listening skills in an ear training exercise. In this way, links between subjects of instrumental and theory lessons can be established.

The tool provides services to:

• create musical patterns based on theoretical concepts, like chords or scales
• modify existing musical patterns in order to focus on selected aspects, specific learning objectives or difficulties
• select and adapt exercise templates and add musical material

With the generation and variation of exercises, I-MAESTRO facilitates personalisation of learning materials. Starting from the same musical pattern or exercise template, exercise variation leads to different exercises. Students can be provided with exercises according to their individual needs and preferences. For teachers, the Exercise Generation Tool should free them from repetitive duties in writing out exercises and give them more time to focus on interaction with their students.

Making the tool available for advanced students helps them to develop their own learning and practising strategies and thus supports meta-learning.
